Traveling with Cloth Diapers
Please join us in welcoming our FIRST guest blogger….Karen from The Mommy Times! We are so excited to share Karen’s fabulous tips on traveling with cloth diapers!
As you all know I am an avid user of cloth diaper’s. We use cloth diaper’s, wipes and try to be as eco-friendly as possible, EVEN while traveling and or being on vacation. It is pretty easy and requires just a little planning. You can choose to bring convenient pockets, or opt for a diaper cover and prefold’s. Either choice works well and you can even mix and match. It is up to you and baby, what works best on the road.
I would start with something very versatile, such as the One Size Diaper Cover from Tiny Tush and some prefolds. The diaper cover can be used many times as long as it doesn’t get soiled and would be extremely easy to wash out, even in a hotel sink and hang to quickly dry. The prefold’s are very absorbent and can be folded to get the perfect absorbency and because they are inexpensive, taking a pack on vacation should last, even with no laundry facilities.
You can use your diaper cover for a swim diaper, too, so no need to go by one, just use your cover by itself! This will keep you eco-friendly in the pool, too. It will save you from expensive disposable swim diapers, and your cover can be multifunctional.
I cloth diaper at home and being away from home is no exception. In one aspect it’s pretty easy since we vacation in a home with a washing machine and dryer BUT on the beach we have to have a solution for stinky diapers. You need to empty the yuckies in the port a potty or at the least, zip it up in your wet bag, until you are close to a potty . I recommend using flushable liner’s when traveling. It just makes clean up a little bit easier. It’s not bad and not any big hassle for us. I put the dirty diapers in my zippered wet bag and launder them when we get back. It is still better than disposables, and really not an inconvenience. We see it as part of the process. I think you would be surprised how very easy it is.
Again, I just want to stress that cloth diapering is not difficult while traveling. You just have to plan ahead a little. I made sure to bring an extra wet bag, cloth diaper detergent and clothespins to line dry. I also brought my cloth wipes, too. For more information about washing cloth diapers, you can click here. This is wonderful information whether you are at home or on the go.
I normally use a wipes warmer for my wipes but while traveling I just use an old Huggies container and learned how to pop up the wipes just like disposable one’s from this tutorial:
Vacation should be a time of fun and relaxation and really it is a cinch to cloth diaper on the go, too. It is more time having fun, and less time running to stores grabbing disposable diapering supplies. I always take the opportunity to talk about cloth while I am away from home. People are naturally curious, and showing them, yes you cloth diaper and even while traveling, gives them a positive look at cloth diapering. The more people that try it, usually stick with it and could not imagine switching back to the land of disposables. So go out and have fun, armed with cloth, be an advocate, and use your extra cash for some real treats instead of wasting money on disposables. You can do it!! You will be proud that you did!
