The co-op and the (almost) rain

The Natural Foods Co-op And The Rain (almost)

Just this past Wednesday was our big co-op day. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very good – it was a bit cold and dreary and we’ve really had a week of rain here in this part of Wisconsin. (And makes us a bit nervous as it reminds us of the terrible floods we had 2 years ago – but let’s not go there!)

But fortunately on Wednesday, as many of my friends and neighbors gathered and the “co-op party” began, the rain held up just long enough….

So what is our co-op and how does it work? It’s similar to many co-ops as we have the opportunity to pre-order items in advance, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to select from a wide range of healthy, organic produce and specialty items. On the designated days, we meet in our local church parking lot and wait for “the truck” to arrive. Then the work (and the fun) begins.

As you can see from the pictures, we don’t arrive at pickup time to simply pickup neatly arranged boxes with our items all pre-packed. That would be too easy! Instead, the items arrive via truck in bulk. That means all co-op participants work together, unload the truck, check the lists to figure out who has ordered what, and divide the items out.

It is helpful when the weather is decent as we literally spread items out in the parking lot, with each family being assigned a box (or many boxes in some cases). It takes 1- 1 1/2 hours to unload the truck and sort out all the food, and ensure that each family receives the correct items. It truly is a fun gathering and opportunity to socialize as we organize these prized goods. All of us look forward to it!

It truly is a fun gathering and opportunity to socialize as we organize these prized goods. All of us look forward to it!My family really thinks this is true (and my husband will remind us of this from time to time!): TEAM stands for “Together Everyone Achieves More.” This is especially true on co-op days, when we realize alone we could never afford to purchase these wonderful food items if we did it alone.

But by coming together as a group, we have the chance to purchase wonderful fresh organic food here in Baraboo, at affordable prices.

Check out more co-op photos on my facebook page! Be sure to say hi and if you what to be apart of our co-op family let me know! http://www.facebook.com/TinyTushProducts?v=photos#!/album.php?aid=167731&id=154160952229

I’ll have to share some of the yummy dishes I make with this food in later posts!

Do you have a favorite recipes that brings back memories? I do, mine is Apple Crisps, it reminds me of my grandma!
